George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones starred in a very funny movie in 2003… the best comedy you have probably never seen… “Intolerable Cruelty”.
“Intolerable Cruelty” is about marriage for the sake of divorce, and, gold-digging raised to an art form.
Clooney plays a high-priced divorce attorney, Miles Massey, whose claim to fame is the “Massey Pre-Nup”. (“They devote a whole semester to it at Harvard Law School.”)
Catherine Zeta Jones plays the gold-digger, Marilyn, whose loyalties only extend to her divorce attorney (not her husbands).
If nothing else, by the time you finish the movie, “Intolerable Cruelty”, you will know who Tenzing Norgay is. I must admit, I learned about Tenzing Norgay from this movie.
George Clooney’s character Miles Massey speculatess that Catherine Zeta Jones’ character, Marilyn, must have had an assistant in finding her latest victim, um, husband. So, Miles Massey sets out to find Marilyn’s “Tenzing Norgay”.
A great comedic performance is also given by Cedric the Entertainer, as Gus Petch, the private eye used by Massey as he tracks down information on cheating spouses.
Finally, I laughed the most when Billy Bob Thornton was on the screen. Thornton played Howard D. Doyle, a clueless Texas oil man and one of Marilyn’s husbands.
“Intolerable Cruelty” is on my list of my 101 Favorite Movies.
