Anne Hathaway can be a brilliant actress handling thought-provoking scripts and developing interesting, multidimensional characters.
Or, she can play typical “Hollywood girl meets boy”, and, eventually, finds happiness, all in 100 minutes of clever banter.
How do I know that Miss Hathaway is this versatile? I’ve seen her doing both: profound and shallow, meaningful and fluff, film and pop movie.
“Rachel Getting Married” is the interesting, multidimensional character development … the hard work.
“One Day” is the Hollywood fluff… the paycheck.
The two best things I can say about the movie, “One Day”:
1. Anne Hathaway is in the movie.
2. About half way through the movie, the song “Roll to Me” by Del Amitri serves as a temporary break from this cute melodrama.
I have a place in my heart for Anne Hathaway. I have a place in my heart for “Roll to Me.” The movie “One Day” never found such a place. Here today. Gone tomorrow. Bring on the next one.
“Rachel Getting Married” is a movie that you will remember. Anne Hathaway plays Kym, the sister of the bride, Rachel. She plays a broken, struggling protagonist. She plays a human being, not a Hollywood creation of a human being.
I suppose there is one more thing I like about “One Day”… the protagonist’s name (played by Anne Hathaway) is Emma. I love the name “Emma”. And “Emily”. And, apparently, so does America.
“Emma” and “Emily” are the most popular names for new born girls in America.
And that makes sense.
When you’re writing a script for Hollywood success, and, you are creating one dimensional characters to entertain us for 100 minutes… why not go all the way, and, name the main character the most popular name in current culture? What could be more telling?
On the other hand, “Rachel” was the 100th most popular name in 2010. As you may guess, “Kym” doesn’t even hit the board.
So, as an alternative to seeing “One Day”, see Anne Hathaway in “Rachel Getting Married” and go here to listen to “Roll to Me”. Count yourself the wiser.
UPDATE: Anne Hathaway will be playing Cat Woman in the upcoming “Dark Knight Rises”.
