In a recent post about the wartime classic, Casablanca, I mentioned that Dooley Wilson, who played the jovial piano player Sam, was not even nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The man at the center of one of the most iconic scenes in American cinema didn’t get a nomination. I decided to do some more investigating.

It gets worse. Much worse.

In the original closing credits for Casablanca, Dooley Wilson’s name is nowhere to be found. The man who sang “As Time Goes By” had to watch time pass him by until his death in 1953 at the age of 67.

“Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By’”

And so, those were the words of the lovely Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) as she finds herself in Rick’s in the 1942 classic, Casablanca.

Movie aficionados also know that Rick (Humphrey Bogart) never said “Play it again, Sam.”

He said, “You played it for her. You can play it for me. If she can stand it, I can. Play it.”
