The movie begins with what looks to be a gathering at a strict British boarding school. At the time, neither the audience nor the children realize that this is not an ordinary boarding school.

We are introduced to the movie’s three central characters as children: Ruth, Kathy and Tommy.

Most of the movie takes place during the main characters’ young adult lives (late teens and early twenties).
